On-ice measures of external load in relation to match outcome in elite female ice hockey
The aim of this study is to investigate the differences between select on-ice measures using inertial movement sensors based on match outcome, and to determine changes in player movements across three periods of play. Data were collected during one season of competition in elite female ice hockey players (N = 20). Two-factor mixed effects ANOVAs for each skating position were performed to investigate the differences in match outcome, as well as differences in external load measures during the course of a match. For match outcome, there was a small difference for forwards in explosive ratio (p = 0.02, ES = 0.26) and percentage high force strides (p = 0.04, ES = 0.50). When viewed across three periods of a match, moderate differences were found in skating load (p = 0.01, ES = 0.75), explosive efforts (p = 0.04, ES = 0.63), and explosive ratio (p = 0.002, ES = 0.87) for forwards, and in PlayerLoad (p = 0.01, ES = 0.70), explosive efforts (p = 0.04, ES = 0.63), and explosive ratio (p = 0.01, ES = 0.70) for defense. When examining the relevance to match outcome, external load measures associated with intensity appear to be an important factor among forwards. These results may be helpful for coaches and sport scientists when making decisions pertaining to training and competition strategies.York University Librarie
The intensity attenuation of Colfiorito and other strong earthquakes: the viewpoint of forecasters and data gatherers
This article has been originated by thoughts on previous analyses related to the proba-
bilistic treatment of the macroseismic attenuation, from which it turns out that in Italian
territory the intensity decay I varies greatly from one region to another, depending on
many factors, some of them not easily measurable. By applying a clustering algorithm
we classified some macroseismic fields drawn from the Italian felt report database in three
classes. Earthquakes into the same class constituted the input of a two-step procedure for the
Bayesian estimation of the probability distribution of I at any distance from the epicenter,
conditioned on I0, where I is considered an integer, random variable, following a binomial
distribution. The estimated distributions were validated by forecasting the macroseismic
field of the Colfiorito earthquake. In this article we deal with the issues left open by those
statistical analyses by following two ways: on one hand we test the procedure by forecasting
the macroseismic field of other strong earthquakes recorded in Italy during the last century
and, on the other hand, we ask the reasons of peculiarities in the results to experts in other
fields. The article is hence an introductory work, an example of the possibility and of the
need of exchange of knowledge
Design, synthesis and biological activity of selective hCAs inhibitors based on 2-(benzylsulfinyl)benzoic acid scaffold
A large library of derivatives based on the scaffold of 2-(benzylsulfinyl)benzoic acid were synthesised and tested as atypical inhibitors against four different isoforms of human carbonic anhydrase (hCA I, II, IX and XII, EC 4.2.1.1). The exploration of the chemical space around the main functional groups led to the discovery of selective hCA IX inhibitors in the micromolar/nanomolar range, thus establishing robust structure-activity relationships within this versatile scaffold. HPLC separation of some selected chiral compounds and biological evaluation of the corresponding enantiomers was performed along with molecular modelling studies on the most active derivatives
Bootleggers, Baptists &(and) Televangelists: Regulating Tobacco by Litigation
The bootleggers and Baptists public choice theory of regulation explains how durable regulatory bargains can arise from the tacit collaboration of a public-interest-minded interest group (the Baptists) with an economic interest (the bootleggers). Using the history of tobacco regulation, this Article extends the bootleggers and Baptists theory of regulation to incorporate the role of policy entrepreneurs like the state attorneys general and private trial lawyers who joined forces to regulate tobacco by litigation. We denominate these actors televangelists and demonstrate that they play a pernicious role in regulation.
The Article begins by showing how tobacco regulation through the 1980s fit the traditional bootleggers and Baptists public choice model. It then explores the circumstances that made it possible for the emergence of the televangelists as a regulatory partner that the bootleggers would prefer. The Article then criticizes televangelist-bootlegger bargains as likely to result in substantial wealth transfers from large, unorganized groups to the coalition partners. It also shows how televangelist-bootlegger coalitions are more pernicious than bootlegger-Baptist coalitions. Finally, it concludes with suggestions for how to make televangelist-bootlegger coalitions less durable
A Logical Form Parser for Correction and Consistency Checking of LF resources
In this paper we present ongoing work for the correction of Extended
WordNet (XWN), the most extended freely downloadable resource of Logical
Forms (LFs) – by the Human Language Technology Research Institute
(HLTRI) of University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). In a previous paper we reported
on type and number of errors detected in the 140,000 entries of the resource,
which amounted to some 30%. This didn’t include problems related to
inconsistencies from disconnected variables which were not computable at the
time. We now created an LF parser that parses each entry after appropriate
transformations. The parser has been created to count the number of disconnected
variables, be they object variables or predicate event variables: the result
is 56% of LFs containing some disconnected variable. We devised two procedures
for correction: one lexical and the other structural which eventually allowed
a dramatic reduction: the final count is now 24%. Additional work has
been carried out to improve the general consistency by manual intervention on
"inconsistent" outputs signaled by the parser and has reduce the number of errors
to a reasonable percentage for such a resource, that is less that 15%

Agile manufacturing: General challenges and an IoT@Work perspective
This paper describes the potential impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and architecture on factory automation. Whereas, IoT use cases range from intelligent infrastructure and smart cities to health care and shopping assistants, it is important to note that factory automation could benefit as well from an IoT approach. In this paper, we argue that there will not be one IoT but many IoTs that could differ in the type of infrastructure they are running or applications they support. In IoT@Work we focus on the potential of making manufacturing environments more agile and flexible. We explain how the IoT-centric architecture for manufacturing also needs a deep understanding of the manufacturing system and its state today. We, therefore, do a reverse engineering based on the requirements and the description of the agility expected in the automation system itself
Sustainable rearing for kid meat production in Southern Italy marginal areas: A comparison among three genotypes
Sustainable goat breeding plays an important role in the economy of marginal areas. The present study aimed to compare performances and meat quality traits in kids of a native Apulian genotype (Garganica) in comparison with two Mediterranean breeds (Maltese and Derivata di Siria). Kids suckled dam milk until they were 21 (±2) days old, hence three groups of 12 male kids per each genotype were made. The kids received a pelleted feed ad libitum in addition to dam milk and were slaughtered at 60 days of age. The Maltese kids showed the lowest net cold-dressing percentage, with statistical differences compared to Garganica and Derivata di Siria. Meat obtained from Garganica kids showed a rosy color due to a significantly lower a* index and were also more tender since a lower WBS was recorded in comparison with the other two genotypes. As for the nutritional value of meat, the best n-6/n-3 ratio was found for the Derivata di Siria breed. In conclusion, Garganica kid meat showed the lowest content of SFA and atherogenic index, with potential beneficial effects for human health
Scalable manufacturing of gene-modified human mesenchymal stromal cells with microcarriers in spinner flasks
Due to their immunomodulatory properties and in vitro differentiation ability, human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) have been investigated in more than 1000 clinical trials over the last decade. Multiple studies that have explored the development of gene-modified hMSC-based products are now reaching early stages of clinical trial programmes. From an engineering perspective, the challenge lies in developing manufacturing methods capable of producing sufficient doses of ex vivo gene-modified hMSCs for clinical applications. This work demonstrates, for the first time, a scalable manufacturing process using a microcarrier-bioreactor system for the expansion of gene-modified hMSCs. Upon isolation, umbilical cord tissue mesenchymal stromal cells (UCT-hMSCs) were transduced using a lentiviral vector (LV) with green fluorescent protein (GFP) or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) transgenes. The cells were then seeded in 100 mL spinner flasks using Spherecol microcarriers and expanded for seven days. After six days in culture, both non-transduced and transduced cell populations attained comparable maximum cell concentrations (≈1.8 × 105 cell/mL). Analysis of the culture supernatant identified that glucose was fully depleted after day five across the cell populations. Lactate concentrations observed throughout the culture reached a maximum of 7.5 mM on day seven. Immunophenotype analysis revealed that the transduction followed by an expansion step was not responsible for the downregulation of the cell surface receptors used to identify hMSCs. The levels of CD73, CD90, and CD105 expressing cells were above 90% for the non-transduced and transduced cells. In addition, the expression of negative markers (CD11b, CD19, CD34, CD45, and HLA-DR) was also shown to be below 5%, which is aligned with the criteria established for hMSCs by the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy (ISCT). This work provides a foundation for the scalable manufacturing of gene-modified hMSCs which will overcome a significant translational and commercial bottleneck. KEY POINTS: • hMSCs were successfully transduced by lentiviral vectors carrying two different transgenes: GFP and VEGF • Transduced hMSCs were successfully expanded on microcarriers using spinner flasks during a period of 7 days • The genetic modification step did not cause any detrimental impact on the hMSC immunophenotype characteristics
